Không Tên to Celebrate Tết with The Thoughtful Feast Dinner Feb. 5

Tết, the annual celebration of the lunar new year, is the most important holiday on the Vietnamese calendar each year, with three days of raucous celebrations taking over the country. And this year, the new “New Vietnamese” restaurant Không Tên is commemorating the occasion with a very special four-course meal—that also benefits the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

The Menu

  • Bar snacks and drinking food. House-made 4-day beef jerky, farmers market pickles, spicy & sour cashews, toothpick beef
  • Traditional Tết dishes. House-made Vietnamese charcuterie and bánh chưng (sticky rice and mung bean cakes steamed in banana leaves)
  • Evolved Vietnamese foods. Side-by-side tastings of Không Tên’s take and the old-school traditional version of three dishes: bok choy salad vs. goi, turmeric dill black cod vs. cha ca, hoisin sirloin vs. bo luc lac (AKA shaking beef)
  • Dessert. Asian pears, mung bean cakes and coffee panna cotta

In between courses, Vu will share her stories about the menu items and their personal significance. A first-generation Vietnamese-American chef, Vu has a unique perspective on the food and culture of Vietnam. Vu’s parents and older siblings fled the Vietnam War as refugees, and she was the first member of her family born in the United States. Her first language was Vietnamese, but she grew up in Texas, and that cross-cultural atmosphere is a strong influence on her food. Foss, who is a board member of the Culinary Historians of Southern California and guest curator for an upcoming exhibit at the Autry Museum of the American West about successive waves of immigration and how they changed California cooking, will also help put the dishes in a larger context.

Tickets to The Thoughtful Feast are $95 per person, $20 of which is a tax-deductible donation to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. There will be two seatings, at 6:30 and 9 PM, each with a capacity of 40.
